More SIXAXISIS Rumble rumors...
The site where "game developers speak out" Inner Bits has posted a handful of new SIXAXIS based news chunks, writing that "prototypes of the new rumble-enabled controllers have made their way to various Sony developers." Inner Bits expects that the new vibrating controllers will probably be announced within the next two or three months—on or around the dates of Games Convention and Tokyo Game Show—once developers have more hands-on time with the device.
Furthermore, it appears that the original rumble-free SIXAXIS is also getting some updates. Addressing controller sensitivity issues, Inner Bits reports that Sony has been "quietly replacing the original controllers" with better tuned hardware.
Ah, the curse of early adoption. At least we OG PLAYSTATION 3 owners have our Emotion Engines to cuddle up with late at night.

EA blames slow growth on PS3, F*** you and F*** Moore!
EA made a ton of money this quarter. Nothing new! Thing is they didn't make quite as much as they wanted to. And that's including the Potter boy's sales exploits. So who's to blame? Why the PlayStation 3, of course. EA boss John Riccitiello has said that while the company was all over the PS2, the lack of sales on the PS3 is hurting:
""Point blank, this cycle is developing quite differently than the last cycle. The next-gen hardware build is going a little more slowly.
This time, there's been some unexpected strength with the Wii and the PS3 hasn't--yet--performed as well as we expected it to. That probably has a bigger impact than any other factor on our margins""

In other words, the cashed-up rich guy went to the races, bet the farm on the PS3, and some loose change on the Wii. And lost a lotta cash. This is why you should never, ever bet on horses. Or game consoles. But especially horses.Lagging PS3 Sales Hurt EA's Margins
Harboiled on Stranglehold screwing Hollywood?
Newsweek's gaming news ranger N'Gai Croal pinged Midway about its upcoming Stranglehold. The non-region free (bastards!) PS3 Special Edition version contains a copy of John Woo's classic Hard Boiled packed on the same Blu-ray disc. That's actually a somewhat revolutionary idea: packing games and movies on the same disc for only ten dollars more than the Blu-ray movie. Midway's Steve Allison, who pitched the original game-movie pairing pack, explains how Midway structured the deal:
""The Weinsteins and Genius Products, their home video partner, are very forward thinking on this issue, I have to say. We approached them not knowing their plans for their own re-release of "Hard Boiled" at the end of July. To protect them against worries of cannibalizing their release we did two things:
1. We contractually limited the total number of units we would produce to a set number. I can't tell you the number beyond the fact that it's a six-figure quantity, and this works to make the Special Edition a real collector's item--hopefully a part of videogame history in that it's the first ever SKU to have a game and film on the same disc.2. The film can only play/launch on a Sony Playstation 3 game system, not from a dedicated Blu-Ray player. This means a videophile can't buy this for their Blu-Ray player; it's going to be a gamer who is passionate about this SKU.
We used the master digital tape from the film print and then ourselves converted it to support all HD resolutions, including 1080p. It's really the storage capacity of Blu-Ray that makes this pairing possible, and it's still a compelling product.""

As mentioned above, they also made this bundle region protected. Bad news for folks who live outside the States! Yes, I understand that they did this due to the movie's territorial rights, but that still does nothing to muffle the giant sucking sound.
SCEE responds to GT5 Rumors..
Following speculation on a number of different gaming sites about the number of cars that will feature in GT5, Threespeech contacted SCEE directly, to get some comment / confirmation from them.
“Despite news articles claiming that ‘SCEI/Polyphony Digital’ have made an official announcement with regards to GT5 featuring 1000 vehicles, we can confirm that this is pure speculation. It would appear that the list is a mixture of vehicles that were included in previous GT titles, coupled with somebody’s own fantasy garage.
Further details about GT5 will be announced in due course, but for the moment at least, we can confirm that the current car list/speculation, does not come from SCE.”

PS3 Fanboy interviews Everyday Shooter's Jon Mak
One PSN title captivated us more than any other at E3: it's Everyday Shooter, an award-winning music-shooter game. The smooth visuals, combined with the absorbing music, and addictive gameplay, made it one of our favorite (but underrated) games of E3. We had a chance to talk to Jon Mak, after his incredible E3 showing to talk more about Everyday Shooter, and working with Sony as an indie game designer....

Codemasters overrules Overlord PS3 rumor
Speaking to Eurogamer, a Codemasters spokesperson has made it inescapably clear that evil minion sim Overlord will not be conquering the PlayStation 3 anytime soon. "We are not porting Overlord to PS3." Gosh, that's a lot more direct than we're accustomed to in the world of video game news. Usually we'd expect something along the lines of "Codemasters may fail to not rule out considering the possibility of not creating a version of Overlord for the PS3 currently at this time not." The rumor initially sprang from a job listing by developer Triumph Studios which politely asked for a PS3 programmer, one capable of "porting X360/PC code base to PS3." We have no idea what game Triumph is working on next, but we sincerely hope someone sends Overlord writer Rhianna Pratchett a PS3 by the time it comes out.
80GB PS3 goes on sale on EB Games' site
If you're the sort that turns their nose up at paying less that $600 for a PS3 and has an insatiable hunger for gigabytes and off-road racing, you may want to point your browser to EBgames.com, where 80GB PS3 pre-orders have gone on sale.It may seem a bit of overkill to pre-order a system that's already available and hasn't exactly been flying off shelves, but those who want to pay $600 for their game system as a matter of pride or only like a limited number of the PS2 games they own may want to act fast. -- If some are to be believed, you may have less time to buy a $600 PS3 than you think.
MGS4 followup interview on 1up.
Speaking to GameTrailers at the Metal Gear Solid 20th Anniversary shindig a few weeks back, assistant producer at Kojima Productions, Ryan Payton, answers some of of the pressing questions in this post-demonstration world that we live in. Questions like, "How does octocam work on Snake's head?"Even if you've analyzed the E3 trailer frame-by-frame, this interview does warrant a look, if not to see Ryan answer the age old question of, "Is this truly the end of the Metal Gear series?" Well, of course it isn't but that hasn't stopped Kojima from saying so ... again. Ryan offers up a much more likely outcome, saying, "It's far from over but as far as Solid Snake's story? Yeah, we're going to wrap it up with Metal Gear Solid 4."
Lair Update..bad news..
Due to an extra step in QA testing to enhance the community features in the game, the release of LAIR, originally set for August 14th, has changed to September 4, 2007. Natural challenges that arose while finalizing the offline game to include key online features - such as leaderboards and medal systems - have led to the difficult choice of pushing back the release date. We appreciate everyone’s excitement and patience for the game and look forward to its release on September 4.

Sixaxis Rumble as well as Touchsense Rumble Confirmed!
The release of a force-feedback SIXAXIS is a rumor that has been rumbling about for some time (har-har). Lawsuits later, Sony was forced to remove the rumble from their controller and have apparently reinstated it. Today, a Sony Computer Entertainment employee confirmed directly to me that the SIXAXIS with rumble is coming. Nothing like getting something that's been taken away!
SAN JOSE, Calif., Jul 11, 2007 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Immersion Corporation (Nasdaq:IMMR), a leading developer and licensor of touch feedback technology, today announced that gaming peripheral manufacturers Hori (U.S.A.) and Katana Game Accessories have both entered into patent licenses with Immersion, including rights for advanced vibro-tactile, spinning mass gaming technologies for dedicated portable gaming devices and computer and console video gaming peripherals. Hori develops peripherals and accessories for gaming consoles such as the Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox, and Nintendo products. Katana designs, manufactures, and in September 2007, will begin distributing peripherals for Sony PlayStation products in North America. Under the terms of the license, these products will now bear Immersion's Feel The Game® TouchSense® Technology logo."All our products are built with the strictest standard of quality," said Yuuki Mizutani, of Hori (U.S.A.). "Rumble technology is one of the key features that makes playing racing and flight simulator games on Hori controllers easier and more realistic.""As a company that has just entered the console accessory business, Katana is focused on providing very high-quality products to enhance the Sony PlayStation gaming experience," said Katana President Chris McGlynn. "We consider Immersion's technology a key ingredient and look forward to putting it to work for PlayStation gamers."
PS3 to get Digi-Tuner by 2008?
MCV's prediction that Sony may be soon unveiling support for terrestrial digital broadcast service Freeview for the PLAYSTATION 3 is looking spot on following comments from Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand boss Warwick Light. He told Kiwi outlet The Press that the company is "hoping next year... to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder." His timeframe? First quarter of 2008, alongside the New Zealand launch of Freeview.
Freeview is already available to fans of receiving television signals in the UK, broadcasting dozens of television and radio channels. It's possible that the PS3 TV tuner could simply be added via one of the console's four USB ports and that larger hard drive options may coincide with the product announcement.
But I'm just riffing here. I'm sure we'll know by Games Convention in August if this whole thing pans out.
The future according to Sony

Game Critics Awards Announced.
In case you haven’t seen this yet, the E3 2007 Game Critics Award winners were released earlier today. For those of you unfamiliar with the Game Critics, it’s a collection of independent journalists that cover the videogame industry. And, in their words:
“These awards recognize the games that will shape the future of interactive entertainment, as demonstrated via hands-on playable form at the 2007 E3 Media and Business Summit”
We here at PS3B3yond wanted to extend a quick congrats to all those nominated, especially the people behind the PlayStation games that were recognized this year; in particular, the teams at Media Molecule for Little Big Planet which won “Best Original Game” and at Guerilla Games for Killzone 2 which earned “Special Commendation for Graphics.” Congratulations all!

Sony "Cell" Lawsuit Cleared
Filed in 2001 and issued in 2007, actually lists the 1991 patent as a citation. In other words, Sony’s own patent lawyers have already seen the old patent and deemed it not to be a threat, and the U.S. Patent Office apparently agreed when it issued Sony the patent in June. That’s no guarantee that Parallel Processing Corp. doesn’t have a case, but it makes their somewhat outlandish outcome seem a little less likely. According to NextGen, the company is demanding “the impounding and destruction of all Defendant’s products that infringe the ‘000 Patent.” Lock up your PS3’s, kids!

This time Sony isn't going the way of the Betamax and be antiporn
"Early this year the meme circulated that Blu-ray might be going the way of Betamax, and for the exact same reason: Sony's unfriendliness to the porn industry. But at Japan's recent euphemistically named Adult Treasure Expo 2007, adult filmmakers said Sony has begun offering technical support, and this was later confirmed by Sony PR. The company stated that Sony would offer support to any filmmaker working on the format, no matter their industry. Apparently, Blu-ray is now the preferred medium for Japanese adult films."
Phil Harrison Interview on 1up, Talks Madden and more.
"Madden on PS3 Only 30 FPS"
[pause] Well, I can only point to our own sports studio [doing a] 1080p, 60 frames-per-second basketball game, but I'm afraid I have no idea. We're providing some tools and technologies from our worldwide studio's core technology groups to 3rd parties now, as well. You may remember something from GDC, we announced this thing called EDGE and that's now widely deployed within the 3rd party community, and that is clearly improving the developer's ability to maximize what the CELL processor does. Hopefully, that will assist folks like EA. It would concern me if the platform was incapable of doing it, but we've proven the platform is capable of doing it, so it's not a PlayStation 3 issue. I'm trying to be polite."
"How Home is Progressing?"
"We did have a small hiccup on getting the Home development kit out, but it actually went out on Tuesday [Harrison is referring to Tuesday, July 10th], so that's already started out there. Some of the functionality that goes into Home is actually based on top of the PlayStation Network functionality and it has to be deployed there first before we can put the visual layer on top of it, so there's a couple of different schedule issues in that, but, we're on schedule for the Fall, as we said yesterday. Game launching, the ability to launch games directly from inside of Home, is in the next library update for developers, which will be in August.
"Will Home be Feature Complete this Fall?"
It's hard to tell because we're still in the beta program, so I can't give you a definitive, but, also, it's unlike building a disc-based game, where you have to get everything on the disc and then ship it. What we're going is starting a service and a week later we can add a bit more functionality and a week after that we can add something else. There will be features that get added over time, it's not going to be everything that we've ever talked about at the beginning of the service. I'm being very clear we never intended for that to be the case, either, but we have a clear road map of where and how and when we're going to be adding functions and features.
"On Countering Wii's Casual Draw"
We've had tremendous success with Singstar -- it's a $200 and something million dollar franchise for us, over 10 million units. I acknowledge the core of that audience is in Europe and it's still yet to establish itself strongly in the US, but we have some big strong plans for it this year. I think it's good that other companies are looking at that space, as well, because it will help grow the market. On a macroeconomic basis, if the industry is in good health because there are new consumers coming in, I'm not going to give you a format competitive response to that, because I think it's positive.
"Wipeout HD a Stopgap?"
Let me be clear, Wipeout HD is a fully functioning game, full online multiplayer functionality. You'll be able to download additional tracks over time, but the core game experience is a fully featured game experience."

Blu-Ray is vindicated.
DVD9 and the 360 show once again there a bit behind in "next Gen"
Fully flexible PGR4 textures too big to fit on a DVD.
Chalk this one up to delighted giggling in the Sony camp. According to series of posts on the Bizarre Creations forums made by multiple staff members, Project Gotham Racing 4 will only feature a limited set of day / night options for each track, due largely to the difficulty of fitting the required pre-rendered textures onto a DVD.
Ben, a Bizarre Creations staffmember, kicked off the probably unintentional kerfuffle by stating, "You won't see different times of day per city because this involves recreating all the textures again (one for day and one for night). Whilst this wasn't a problem for our dev team, it was a problem fitting all this data onto a single DVD. So we've worked around the problem by providing different lighting models per city. For example, Macau is always in the daytime, but if you play it during a storm everything looks darker and more foreboding. If you play during a blizzard then things are slightly tinged blue and everything seems more frozen. Of course, playing this track in sunshine will make everything appear bright and yellowy."
Alan M, another staffmember, then clarified by saying, "In the past we've always had day and night and to do this we've had to create a duplicate set of textures for most of the buildings, obviously there is the space on the disc and the time it will take make all those night time textures."
He continued, "For some cities night time is important, as good as Vegas looks in the day everyone really wants to see it at night, so in PGR4 only night will be available, and if you thought Vegas and Tokyo looked good at night wait until you see what Shanghai looks like! So at it’s base there is only one time of day, add to that the different weather settings and you get more variation to each of the cities than just Day and Night would give you."
Those hoping for a second disc had their expectations dashed when Ben jumped in again, adding, "Having the game spread across two discs isn't an option for a number of reasons. Sorting out gameplay both in single and multiplayer where you always have to swap discs around would be difficult, and detrimental to the flow of the game. Also, having two discs puts the price of manufacturing up, and that's one we'd have to discuss with the publisher."
Based on these discussions, Sony was quick to get in on the act and point out the benefits of using a larger storage medium. Speaking to Gamesindustry.biz, Dave Karraker, Sony's spokesperson, pointed to the importance of selecting Blu-ray over standard DVD storage as a mechanism for avoiding these problems.
Karraker happily pointed out Sony's foresight, stating, "We took a lot of heat at launch for including Blu-Ray in PS3. Now it looks like that investment is being justified. Next generation games simply need more space on the disc to contain all that high definition content. Take a look at Lair, for example, already pushing 25GB of content, and that is a first-generation title. At 50GB storage capacity, Blu-Ray gives the PS3 plenty of headroom for developers to fully realize their visions well into the future."
Did Sony call it right? Is the lack of storage space a real issue? Did Bizarre Creations take the wrong route by avoiding purely dynamic lighting and using pre-rendered textures instead? Jump on the forums and let us know, as this is only going to become even more interesting as all three consoles move deeper into their lifecycle.
